The Eastern Door: Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Program
I while ago I did a freelance piece for The Eastern Door, a newspaper in the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory outside of Montréal. A local program for diabetes prevention was receiving a Canadian Health Research Award at the National Gallery here in Ottawa. The paper needed someone in Ottawa to cover the event, and of course I volunteered! I got to hang out in the beautiful atrium of the National Gallery : ) and learn about the inspiring story of Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Program, as well as the other award recipients. One young doctor who was awarded for his work on smoking prevention talked about why he does his work. He talked about the meaningfulness of working with patients who are suffering the effects of decades of smoking. These patients want to prevent smoking in others more than anyone. It was really a treat to hear the recipients’ acceptance speeches.
An interesting note: Kahnawake was recently featured in the Globe and Mail for being a place where various local media are flourishing. Read Dispatches from Kahnawake
